about the old balls cc
The Club originates from the Old Boys of Alderman Smith School in Radnor Drive, Nuneaton which opened its doors in September 1958 being named after Local Alderman, Smith and Closed its doors in 2010, opening the next day as Nuneaton Academy thus ending the lineage of Alderman Smiths name.
In 2022 a group of ex Alderman Smith Students from the 1993-1997 era grouped together to form a 25-year reunion of the last game of cricket they won at the school back in 1997. The team had been successful in each town competition winning 3 out of the 4 years. Having not seen each other for over a quarter of a century this was a test of wills to retain the knowledge, skill and athleticism of a bygone era.
The game on the 17th of July 2022 against Attleborough Sports CC was a success, and the team went on to hold an astonishing 25-year unbeaten record. Above that, it was apparent that remaining active, the camaraderie and inclusion of team sport was the biggest winner, and it was this day that the Alderman Old Balls were fully established.
We now play a series of local and touring friendly games as well as charitable events and are always looking for ways to keep active in older age.
what we do
"getting active and keeping healthy both physically and mentally is the key aim."
Getting active and remaining active into older age becomes harder and harder. Access to social and inclusive sport is the key to supporting a healthier lifestyle both physically and mentally.
We are an open access mixed ability cricket club with both mens and ladies teams. We are made up of predominantly older players with a simple aim to get active, and support each other as we all navigate through the stresses of modern life.
As well as play social friendly and league games, we attend net training sessions throughout the year, and also organise social, charity and fundraising events.
As a charity and cause close to our hearts the charity for season 2023 and 2024 is Mind. there are 3 times as many men as women die by suicide · Men aged 40 to 49 have the highest suicide rates in the UK. Men don't talk or seek help. We are actively working with mind to support the mental health of our members through the support and environment we provide.
we are really lucky to be supported in our endeavours by a great set of supporters, sponsors and Grant providers which allow us to continue our work each season.
we want to create a fun and social step into cricket for all
Staying active as you age offers numerous benefits for both your physical and mental health. Here are a few reasons why it's crucial and how cricket can help:

Womens Team
In 2024 The Alderman Smith Old Balls Cricket Club formed a Womens Cricket team.
The Vision was to be able to start off with the FUN-damentals of the sport , slowly introducing the skills in order to play a minimum of 1 x Womens only Softball Cricket game in 2024. And 2025 and beyond build a group capable of playing in their first Hardball Cricket game.
This aim was smashed within weeks, with the team growing in size and confidence we entered into the Nuneaton District Softball League and even played Hardball cricket. The sky is the limit for this team...
